    Acasis TB501Pro Thunderbolt 5 SSD enclosure

    The Acasis TB501Pro is the enclosure that keeps coming up whenever someone asks for a cheaper alternative to OWC’s Thunderbolt 5 drives. It’s priced at $174, down from a $299 list, and rated for up to 6,000MB/s. I went through independent benchmark reviews, the product’s own spec sheet, and buyer complaint threads to see if that price actually holds up under real use.

    What it’s built on

    The TB501Pro runs on an Intel JHL9480 chip paired with an RTL9210 controller. It supports Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, and USB4, and it falls back to USB 3.2, 3.1, and 3.0 on older machines. The enclosure holds a single M.2 NVMe SSD up to 8TB, in 2230, 2242, 2260, or 2280 form factors, covering PCIe Gen5, Gen4, and Gen3 drives.

    Installation is tool-free. You pop the aluminum shell open, seat the SSD, and close it back up. No driver install, no power adapter required for most drives.

    What the benchmarks actually show

    Independent reviewer testing on the pocnetwork.net review site measured close to 1.3GB/s with a PCIe Gen3 drive installed, and 5,000 to 6,000MB/s with a Gen5 WD_BLACK SN8100 drive. That lines up with Acasis’s own claim and puts it close to the chipset’s practical ceiling rather than the theoretical 10GB/s a full Thunderbolt 5 link could support.

    A separate hands-on review from johnmakphotography.com gave the enclosure a perfect 5-star rating, calling out the aluminum build and heat dissipation design specifically for editing 4K and RAW files directly off the drive without copying files first.

    The compatibility issue worth knowing about

    Early TB501Pro units shipped with a version of the JHL9480 chip that struggled with certain PCIe Gen5 SSDs. Acasis’s own product listing carried a warning to avoid Gen5 drives for a period, which is an unusually honest thing for a manufacturer to admit in its own marketing copy.

    Acasis worked with Intel to resolve it with an updated “B2” revision of the chip, and current stock ships with that fix. If you’re buying used or from a third-party seller with older stock, confirm the chip revision before pairing it with a Gen5 drive.

    Cooling and noise

    The Pro model uses a manual cooling fan button, and the higher-tier TB501Max switches to automatic temperature-triggered cooling plus a 90W USB-C PD passthrough port. Reviewers noted the fan stays off under light use and only kicks in noticeably under sustained heavy transfers, which is the behavior you want from active cooling on a portable enclosure.

    How it compares

    Against OWC’s Thunderbolt 5 enclosures, the TB501Pro is meaningfully cheaper for comparable rated speeds, though OWC still holds the edge on long-term reliability reputation among reviewers who have run both side by side. I laid out that comparison in full in Acasis vs OWC.

    Should you buy it

    If you need Thunderbolt 5 speeds for video editing or large file transfers and don’t want to pay OWC pricing, the TB501Pro is a genuinely strong pick, as long as you confirm you’re getting current stock with the fixed chip. Keep the original packaging in case you need to make a warranty claim, and register your purchase where possible.
