Nourishme Organics Organic Milk Kefir Grains 5g pack

Of everything Nourishme Organics sells, one product has more reviews than almost anything else in the catalog: the Organic Milk Kefir Grains, at $29.97 for 5g with 789 reviews and an 85% five-star rate. I went through a large chunk of those reviews, plus the product specs, to see whether the “buy once, ferment forever” pitch actually plays out.

    What you actually get

The pack is 5g of fresh, laboratory-analysed milk kefir grains, plus a recipe e-book emailed to you when the order ships. According to Nourishme Organics’ own product page, the grains contain the Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens CGMCC2809 (ZW3) strain and can produce roughly 30 to 100 probiotic strains once active.

The process is simple in theory: add the teaspoon of grains to 250ml of organic milk, leave it at room temperature, and you get a cup of kefir a day. The grains themselves never get used up. You strain them out, feed them fresh milk, and repeat.

    What buyers are actually saying

85% five-star across 789 reviews is a strong result at that volume. Buyers describe “beautiful thick kefir” and praise the amount of instructional detail included with the order. One Perth buyer noted the grains brewed unusually fast in summer heat and needed a bit of trial and error to dial in.

The other side: about 7% of reviews are one-star, and the recurring theme is grains arriving inactive. One Sydney buyer said the batch they received “clearly wasn’t alive.” That’s the real risk with any live culture product, and it’s worth going in with eyes open rather than assuming every pack behaves identically.

Shipping and storage matter more than usual

Because this is a living product, Nourishme Organics only ships grains Monday through Wednesday, so they don’t sit in a depot over a weekend. Express shipping is recommended specifically for this item. Once it arrives, refrigerate it in milk and use within two weeks, or freeze for up to two years, though frozen grains may take a few batches to regain full strength.

That’s a meaningfully different unboxing experience than a shelf-stable supplement. I go through the full care routine, including what to do if your kefir turns thin or separates, in how to keep your grains and scobys alive for years.

    How it compares

Against Nourishme Organics’ own catalog, this is the single most-reviewed starter culture they sell, ahead of the kombucha scoby and water kefir grains. Against a subscription probiotic powder from a brand like Nutra Organics, the math is different: one $29.97 purchase here can outlast years of $30-a-bag reorders elsewhere, provided you keep the grains alive. I laid out that full trade-off in Nourishme Organics vs Nutra Organics.

    Should you buy it

If you’re willing to learn the small routine of feeding and straining grains, this is the best-value entry point into Nourishme Organics’ whole catalog. It’s a one-time cost that can produce kefir indefinitely, backed by the most review data of anything the brand sells.

Order with express shipping if you’re not going to be home to refrigerate it right away, and read the return policy before you buy, since live cultures aren’t eligible for standard refunds. For that, see my shipping and returns guide. If you’d rather compare it against the rest of the lineup first, check how to choose the right product for your goals.
